Extinction Rebellion (XR) is planning daily protests from Saturday April 9 until Sunday April 17, and says it will be training members of the public in “nonviolent civil resistance tactics”, with instructions on how to talk to police officers and how to block roads.

The group aims to stage the most roadblocks they have ever carried out, designing them to be “easy to find, easy to join, disruptive, and impossible to ignore.”

David Campbell, a 45-year-old plumber from Cardiff taking part, said: “I’ve taken time out of work to stand up to the government because they are continuing to invest in fossil fuels during the Ukraine crisis, instead of accelerating the transition to a renewable led future that will protect life.

”They’re  doing it in the name of democracy but they’ve no mandate from the people of the UK, and in the meantime, people can’t pay their fuel bills.

”This is a political choice and it’s wrong.”

Hazel, another Welsh activist joining the protest, agreed: “I’m going to London to join the Rebellion because I refuse to be a bystander while the UK government continues with its pursuit of fossil fuels that are killing the planet.

”These protests are a people-powered response to the climate crisis. It is time for all of us to refuse to stand by.”

XR has accused the UK Government of using the war in Ukraine as a “political football” to get out of its responsibilities on climate change, and as a scapegoat for rising living costs – including the recent energy price cap rise that will see some household gas and electricity bills jump up by around £700.

Referencing tearful radio interviews with members of the public “choosing between heating and eating”, the group has called Westminster’s actions “inhumane”.

”All the while, energy companies are making bonanza profits, exploiting the Ukraine crisis to pursue more drilling contracts,” an XR spokesperson, Alanna Byrne, wrote recently.

”The UK Government is choosing to put corporate profit before the lives and livelihoods of ordinary people.

”It is choosing to continue relying on volatile fossil fuels that are driving climate chaos around the globe, rather than taking the climate action that our own Office for Budget Responsibility says is affordable and would create thousands of jobs.”

Bernard Looney, chief executive of fossil fuel giant BP, sparked outrage last year when he described the industry as “literally a cash machine”.

Fellow oil company Shell reported record earnings back in February, with profits increasing by a staggering 300 percent to $19.3billion in 2021, compared with $4.85billion in 2020.

While the French Government has banned energy bill price rises of more than four percent for its citizens, bills are set to increase by 54 percent across the UK.

Westminster’s long-awaited Energy Security Strategy, published on Thursday, was strongly criticised for its licensing of new North Sea oil and gas projects, and its failure to focus on the insulation of homes – a measure considered the fastest way to cut both household energy bills and carbon emissions.

“Weeks later than promised, this half-baked strategy disappoints on many counts – its level of ambition lacklustre, the level of funding too low, and its lack of urgency in terms of decarbonisation utterly disheartening, including inexplicable new oil and gas developments,” Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts said.

The XR protests in London this weekend will come after eight days of action at UK oil refineries carried out by XR and Just Stop Oil, another climate campaign group.

Oil depots at ten different locations were blocked by protestors, who chained themselves to concrete-filled barrels and blocked roads with large bamboo structures.

They said that such action will continue until the UK Government ends all new fossil fuel developments.
